Abstract/Contents:The golf green surfaces at the Detroit Golf Club were Toronto C-15 bent with a dune sand top dressing. This worked well from 1956 until about 1980 when the greens thinned during summer stress. The problem was traced to bacterial wilt and poor water movement through the one inch sand layer which created a short root system. Increased aerification, better water management, etc., did not seem to improve the greens. Other clubs with similar problems replaced their greens with Penncross bent sod with good results. The Detroit Golf Club management consulted with their golf course architect Art Hills about possible putting greens contour changes. They secured bids for complete renovation; $768,000= $439,000 for green, fairway and bunker reconstruction + $329,000 to cover lost revenue to the club and possible financing of the project. At a meeting of the membership, Dr. Vargas of Michigan State University talked about the disease problems of the present greens, Wolfram recited the history of the greens, and James Latham talked about the mechanics of rebuilding the greens to USGA specifications. The membership voted 148 to 32 in favor of the project. Greens renovation began 8/9/88 with the backhoe excavation of the greens to a depth of 18", following the contours of the original green. Hand edging provided a clean boundry. Drain tile was laid in a herringbone pattern and tied to existing drain tiles. A vertical plastic liner was staked in around the edge to avoid the green's edge drying. Next a uniform 4" depth of pea gravel was laid in, then 2" of coarse sand, and finally the top layer: a blend of 75% Grand Haven dune sand, 12.5% Michigan peat, and 12.5% Canadian Spagnum peat. A small bulldozer worked the top mixture from one end to the other. A small trap rake was used to shape the final contours. Fertilizer was applied with 2 pds. of phosphorus in a 13-25-12 blend. The seed was applied in two directions using 2 pds./1000 sq.ft. of a Penncross/Pennlinks mixture. A roller with a series of sand trap rake tires dimpled the surface, and finally a brush smoothed the surface. Grass germinated in as little as 5 days. In about 5 weeks the grass was mowed at 3/8" to promote spreading of the stolons. The fairway renovation began on 8/9/88 with an application of Round-up to the front 9 fairways. To avoid tracking the Round-up, the applicator exited the fairway through a fairway trap. To prepare the fairway for seeding, it was aerified with a 3/4" tined Salsco aerifier, and sliced down to the soil with a Roseman Verticut. Penncross seed was applied at 1 pd./1000 sq.ft. Then the fairway was verticut again to promote seed/soil contact, and rolled. The grass was cut in 4 weeks. Prograss was applied on 10/7/88 and 11/3/88. The North renovation included reseeding 15 ft. of the roughs around the length of the fairways, and all the banks of the greens with a mixture of ryegrasses (Pennant, Pennfine, and Manhattan II) and 25% Scaldia fine fescue. Otherwise these areas were treated the same as the fairway. The dark green color of the ryegrasses provided a good contrast to the fairways. In the winter of 1988-89 the bunker sand will be replaced with Ohio silica. The course should be ready for play in June-July of 1989.
