| Abstract/Contents: | "A number of factors which are thought to contribute to the build up of excessive quantities of fibrous mat beneath the sward of greens at Wollaton Park Golf Club, Nottingham, have been examined. A detailed comparison of the pH, water content and fungal populations has been made between the thatch and soil of the second green and the adjacent fairway where thatch formation does not occur to anything like the same extent. Verdasan, an organo-mercurial fungicide, has been regularly used on the greens for about twenty years as a prophylactic treatment to prevent outbreaks of pathogenic fungi such as Fusarium nivale and Ophiobolus graminis. Laboratory experiments have been conducted to examine the effect of this compound on the saprophytic mycolflora which is primarily responsible for the natural decomposition of organic matter in soils." |
