Abstract/Contents:For optimum selectivity in turfgrass Brominal [bromoxynil octanoate] should be applied at the 3- to 4-leaf stage when weeds are at the 2- to 4-leaf stage. Rates between 6 and 8 oz a.i./acre dissolved in sufficient spray to ensure adequate coverage (usually 34 to 50 gal) control a range of annual broad-leaved weeds. Taraxacum officinale, Portulaca oleracea and Mollugo verticillata were somewhat resistant to Brominal alone but appeared susceptible to a combination of Brominal at 0.5 lb/acre + dicamba at 0.1--.125 lb/acre. Of the turf species, bluegrasses [Poa spp.] and bentgrass [Agrostis spp.] showed most resistance; creeping red fescue [Festuca rubra] was sensitive, though none of the fine-leaved fescues was injured by 0.5 lb/acre. The contact action of the chemical was evident after 12-13 hours of rainfall. Brominal is not usually affected by rainfall and is effective above 60 deg.F, but at 95 deg. or over some grasses show sensitivity, particularly where rates exceed 0.5 lb/acre, where humidity is high or where grass cuticles are only partially formed.
