Abstract/Contents:Data are presented on species composition, climate, pollution, management and nutrient status for 8 football pitches in the N.W., Midlands and S.E. of England at the end of the 1969/70 season. Species making significant contributions to the turf were Poa annua, Lolium perenne, Agrostis tenuis and P. trivalis. Of grass species over-sown P. nemoralis and Cynosurus cristatus did not survive; Phleum pratense and Festuca spp. survived in isolated cases and in small amounts. Turf cover was reduced by wear during play, by shading by the stands and by the movement of machinery. In high-wear areas Poa annua was the most successful species. Lolium perenne was the only species amongst the surviving grasses which does not propagate vegetatively. L. perenne and A. tenuis are recommended for English pitches, and the widespread occurrence of P. trivialis suggests that this species is also useful.
