Abstract/Contents:With melting-out eliminated as a problem through resistance cultivars, fusarium blight and stripe smut have become the major problems in Kentucky bluegrass sod. Fusarium blight is the more important of the two because of its more conscious symptoms and the lack of a permanent solution to the problem. The question is what can be done to keep the customer satisfied? Solutions come under two categories: proper public relations and using the best available cultivars in blends and mixtures. First public relations: Sod should be sold with 10 years as a target date for replacement. This means we should start with the proper cultivars that are resistant to melting out, fusarium blight and stripe smut (Adelphi, Majestic, Touchdown, Parade, and Kentucky bluegrass offer the best solution for the future). Then insist on proper soil preparation prior to laying the sod, and properly maintained after the sod has been laid. The Kentucky bluegrass needs to be mowed at a 2`` minimum height, given about 4 lb. 1,000 square feet of actual nitrogen a season (most applied in the fall). Potassium and Phosphorus should be applied once a year (amount to be determine by results of a soil test), and proper watering is very important. It might be work the time, effort, and money for the dos growers association to draw up a one-page fact sheet explaining some of the points covered.
