Abstract/Contents:"DefendorTM (florasulam) is a new broadleaf herbicide from Dow® AgroSciences that is currently available only as a liquid formulation. Dithiopyr is a leading preemergence crabgrass herbicide in the transition zone and northern U.S., and is available in several formulations. The liquid formulation of dithiopyr, Dimension® 2EW, is sold as a co-pack with DefendorTM. Since much of the lawn care industry apply dithiopyr as a granule (dithiopyr G), a granular formulation of florasulam (florasulam G) would be desirable. A granular formulation may contain only florasulam G or a combination of florasulam G and dithiopyr G. Application timing is one way to maximize product performance. Therefore, a field trial was conducted to determine if fall applications of florasulam G (on 35-0-4 fertilizer) alone or fall applications followed by sequential application of dithiopyr G plus florasulam G (on 35-0-4 fertilizer) in early spring (before dandelion blooms) can provide weed control and/or bloom suppression compared to sprayable products and industry standard broadleaf herbicides. The study was initiated on a perennial ryegrass fairway on September 20, 2012. Experimental design was a randomized complete block with twelve treatments and four replications. Treatments were arranged in a factorial design with five levels of initial florasulam G at 18.3 g ai/ha [none, September (A), October (B), November (C), and December(D)] and two levels of spring sequential (E) (florasulam G plus dithiopyr G at 259 g ai/ha or none). Comparison treatments included Dimension® 2EW at 426 g ai/ha plus DefendorTM at 15 g ai/ha and Dimension® 2EW plus Cool Power (dicamba+MCPA+triclopyr) at 1.77 kg ae/ha, both applied at application timing E, which was in March. Percent visual cover, control, and bloom reduction ratings were taken for perennial ryegrass, white clover, and dandelion, where applicable, at 0, 3, 4, and 7 weeks after application E (WAE). Smooth crabgrass could not be rated as it was not present in sufficient density for assessment throughout the course of the study. None of the herbicide programs injured perennial ryegrass. At 4 WAE, all florasulam G-containing treatments (with and without sequential) controlled dandelion less (≤50%) than Dimension® 2EW plus DefendorTM (90%) and Dimension® 2EW plus Cool Power (93%), but equivalent to each other. However, florasulam at the application timing A, A+E, and B+E suppressed dandelion bloom equivalent to Dimension® 2EW plus DefendorTM and Dimension® 2EW plus Cool Power. At 7 WAE, Dimension® 2EW plus DefendorTM and Dimension® 2EW plus Cool Power controlled dandelion 100 and 90%, respectively, which was higher than florasulam G-containing treatments (≤39%), both with or without sequential. All treatments, except florasulam G at the D (41%) and B (55%) timings, controlled white clover equivalently (78-100%), 7 WAE. Results from this study indicate that florasulam G applied no later than September (without sequential) or October (with sequential) will likely suppress dandelion bloom equivalent to Dimension® 2EW plus DefendorTM and Dimension® 2EW plus Cool Power® applied only in the spring. However, florasulam G does not seem to control dandelion equivalent to Dimension 2EW plus DefendorTM or Dimension® 2EW plus Cool Power® through late spring, but does effectively control white clover."
