Abstract/Contents:Bermudagrasses (Cynodon spp.) used in putting greens became dormant with low winter temperatures and shorter day lengths. The turf quality was evaluated of 44 cool-season grass species and/or mixtures of species overseeded on bermudagrass greens. The major species tested were Lolium multiflorum, L. perenne, Festuca rubra, Agrostis spp. and Poa pratensis. In October the permanent turf was mowed to 3/16 inch and vertically mowed in 3 directions to remove most of the existing turf. A top dressing of 70% sand, 20% soil and 10% peat moss was sterilized and broadcast over the plots and the area treated with captan (5 oz/1,000 sqft). Perennial ryegrasses were the best, at a seeding rate of 40 lb/1,000 sqft, but a more satisfactory turf was obtained with a mixture of species.
