Abstract/Contents:Data from variety trials involving Festuca rubra, Lolium perenne and Poa pratensis showed germination vigour (the ratio of germination percentage at about the 8th day to the final percentage) to be strongly correlated with the initial establishment of single-variety plots. It reflects both seed size and the final germination count of a sample which are seed lot characters only partly, or not at all, related to the genetic character of the variety. The expression of such characters is, however, generally lost quite quickly (within 6-8 weeks of sowing) and a new more permanent pattern emerges reflecting genetic character. In one case, however, disease symptoms in P. pratensis attacked by Drechslera poae were strongly correlated with initial establishment, invalidating most of the apparent conclusions about varietal resistance. In these trials large seed size was apparently advantageous to F. rubra but disadvantageous to L. perenne.
