Abstract/Contents:"In 1972 a trial was laid down seeking to establish what experimental conditions (plant density) would enable the most effective and economic evaluation of plant material (ecotype, line, cultivar), with a view to drawing up a practical selection procedure. Ten cultivars of two species of different general use, Festuca rubra (aesthetic) and Poa pratensis (utility), were used in this work. Three plant densities were compared over 3 years: dense sowing, 10 x 10 cm and 50 x 50 cm. Plots of the first two types were mown and trodden identically, those of the third type were cut 2 - 3 times a year. Characteristics important for value in a turf were noted visually, for all three experimental systems if possible, for two or only one if not. It is shown that: - positive rank correlations exist for many characters, between dense sowing and plants at 10 x 10; this emphasises the interest of this second system, - the nursery conditions with plants at 50 x 50 is of value for only a few characters (colour, fineness, rust..) but is however necessary for the correct choice of plants. In function of these results, an effective scheme for turfgrass species is proposed."
