Abstract/Contents:"Several nitrogen treatments were applied to Merion Kentucky bluegrass turf at two sites: a heavily irrigated sand where clippings were returned. and a moderately irrigated fine sandy loam from which clippings were removed. To study nitrate movement plots were sampled at depths of 0-15, 15-30, 30-45, and 45-60 cm every two weeks during two growing seasons. Nitrates leached more readily in the irrigated sand. Heavy spring applications of soluble nitrogen exhibited appreciable nitrate movement on both soils. but was much more pronounced on the sand. When multiple applications of soluble nitrogen were made there was little leaching evident supporting the importance of lighter. more frequent nitrogen fertilizations to reduce nitrate leaching. Slow release nitrogen carriers had less nitrate movement in the spring while there was a tendency for nitrates to appear at the lower depths during late summer. There was a gradual increase in soil nitrates in the untreated plots as the growing season progressed. This was most apparent on the sand site where clippings were returned to the turf."
