Abstract/Contents:"Pythium blight, incited by Pythium apbanidermatum, is the most serious disease that affects annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) used for overseeding purposes in the Southern United States. Field observations over a number of years had suggested a possible relationship between N fertilization and incidence and severity of this disease. Grass fertilized with either organic sources of N or low levels of inorganic sources was damaged more frequently and more severely than grass adequately fertilized with inorganic sources of N. To determine if this was a true difference, the effects of rates and source of N on disease development was evaluated under controlled conditions. Results showed that increasing the application rate of N derived from NH4NO3 and NaNo3 from 0 to as much as 2.2 kg. per 93 m2 resulted in a progressive decrease in 3 disease severity as measured by diameter of affected spots resulting from uniform inoculations. This decrease was more apparent at 30 C than at 25 C. Fertilization with an inorganic source of N was not as effective in reducing disease severity. These results substantiate the field observations and establish a basis for further experimentation in the management of fertilization practices for control of pythium blight on ryegrass."
