Abstract/Contents:"The annual bluegrass is a very troublesome weed in turf areas both in the warm and in the cooler humid regions. The more recent preemergence herbicides can prevent its germination, however, they have not demonstrated broad effectiveness nor sufficient control. They seem to have little merits in cooler humid regions (Juska, 1969). In Ontario the golf courses have high annual bluegrass population. Because of the difficulty of eradicating this grass a number of golf courses have developed a management program whereby they can more or less 'live with the annual bluegrass'. Use of suitable growth regulators might help the annual bluegrass to pull through the summer dormancy period and aid to improve this program. In the two greenhouse experiments reported here one of the auxin inhibitors, TIBA (2, 3, 5-triiodobenzoic acid) has been applied in 10, 100 and 1,000 ppm concentrations on Kentucky bluegrass and annual bluegrass at three dates of one week intervals i.e. six, seven and eight weeks and five, six and seven weeks after seeding the Kentucky and the annual bluegrass respectively. Seeding the Kentucky bluegrass occurred on February 12, 1972, and the annual bluegrass on August 25, 1972. With added check plots there were twelve (spraying time x concentration) treatments randomized in each of the four blocks. The plots consisted of twenty plants thinned from a seedling of approximately 100 seeds in small (8" x 5" x 3") garden trays. In the Kentucky bluegrass til1ering response based on counting the number of tillers on April 14, May 2, May 17 and June 20 a day after clipping the plants to 1 1/2 inches has been observed besides visual observations. In the annual bluegrass weekly dry weights of the clippings were also recorded. CO2 and C2H4 evolution responses on the seemingly most effective spray concentrations analysed by gas chromotopraphy and leaf area measurements were also recorded of two clipping dates. Both species responded to TIBA sprays applied in these concentrations and no concentration was lethal at any date of application. The responses were much less prominent for the Kentucky bluegrass than for the annual bluegrass. A concentration of 1000 ppm significantly increased the ti11ering in annual bluegrass. Most induction occurred in annual bluegrass for the latest date of spray, just about a week before the first seedhead appeared. A significant reduction in CO2 evolution was observed in clippings taken from plants sprayed with the high concentration spray as opposed to that of the check plants. The leaf area of these clippings were also smaller than that of the unsprayed plants. Use of TIBA or other auxin transport inhibitor growth regulators may increase tillering and thereby extend the vegetative period of the annual bluegrass in the cool humid region fairways without damaging the main component Kentucky bluegrass in the maintenance program."
