Abstract/Contents:"Information on the turf situation in Italy is very poor; this paper gives a general report on the most common species and varieties used in Italy and on their behaviour in the conditions of the Mediterranean region. Particular emphasis is devoted to the experimental work done at the Plant Breeding Institute of the University of Perugia (Central Italy) where many varieties imported from America and Northern-Europe are observed along with local ecotypes. It can be said that commercial seed introductions of the same variety give often different results in relation to the seed sources: it means that the adaptation can be strongly depending from the region where the seed was produced. The characters which seem to be most influenced by seed source are: alternativity, growth period and desease [disease] resistance. The breeding work on turf grasses on course at Perugia's Plant Breeding Institute is now at its beginning; the main objectives are good resistance to the heavy use on soccer's fields, fair tolerance to high temperatures and light intensity and reaction to irrigation practices. Selection on the local populations where the variability is at its highest level, seems to be the must [most] promising method."
