Abstract/Contents:"Turfgrass species differ in ease of establishment from seed, and in rate of seedling growth. Some desirable species exert more stronger competition during seedling establishment than do other species, which may make it difficult to obtain the best quality turf. A study was conducted in the glasshouse to determine the extent of competition amoung [among] two varieties of Poa pratensis and Lolium perenne, and one variety of Festuca rubra, when seeded alone and in combination. Two levels of nitrogen also were applied. Extent of competition was measured by observing changes in number of living plants, leaf area per plant, leaf area index, leaf dry weight. Plants of all species receiving nitrogen were nearly twice as heavy and had twice as much leaf area as unfertilized plants. The effect of variety was not significant in plots receiving nitrogen, after eight weeks of growth. However, both leaf area and leaf dry weight were significantly affected by variety in unfertilized plots. The effect of interspecies competition will also be discussed."
