Abstract/Contents:"Liberal nitrogen fertilization programs are frequently assumed to accelerate thatch accumulation in turfgrass culturing. This characteristic may be valid for neutral or slightly acidic soil conditions; however, recent data from our laboratory do not verify this characteristic under more alkaline soil conditions. The degree of thatch accumulation appeared to be more closely associated with soil pH than nitrogen levels, which ranged from 3 to 12 kg/ha per annum. Thatch accumulation was approximately 1.5 to 2 fold greater under alkaline soil conditions (pH 7.3-7.6) than slightly acid conditions (pH 5.5 to 6.5). Overall thatch accumulation was greatest for Festuca rubra, 'Pennlawn' and least for Festuca arundinacia [arundinacea], 'Ky-31'. Poa pratensis, 'Merion and Kenblue', were intermediate in the degree of thatch accumulation."
