Abstract/Contents:"Agrostis tenuis, Sibth., var. Highland was established on a Puyallup fine sandy loam soil in 1969. Soil test values sampled at the 7.62 cm depth at the time of establishment were: pH = 5.6, P = 16 ppm, K = 225 ppm, Ca = 10 meq/100 g soil and Mg = 1.5 meq/ 100 g soil. The turf was maintained as a putting green and mowed at 0.64 cm. Urea, 56 % N, was the only fertilizer applied during this 5 year test at a rate of 586 kg N/ha. Soil test values for P, K, and Ca remained adequately high, hence supplemental applications were not necessary. Poa annua L. populations averaged 31 % at the time treatments were initiated. Treatments applied were: Besnulide once annually in late summer at 16.8 kg/ha, Bensulide annually at 13.5 kg/ha plus 3.4 kg/ha every 3 months, tricalcium arsenate, included for comparison, at 879 kg/ha divided into 5 applications for the first year and 98 kg/ha in spring and fall each subsequent year, combinations of these treatments with standard fungicides, and a control plot. Significant decreases in Poa annua populations were observed after the second treatment year from tricalcium arsenate and repeated applications of bensulide, but not from the once annual application of bensulide. In 1975, at the termination of the test, there was less than 1 % Poa annua in both bensulide repeated and tricalcium arsenate plots, 31 % in the once annual bensulide plots, and 50 % in the control. There were no significant differences in color and density ratings, nor on root growth. Details of this test will be reported in the final paper."
