Abstract/Contents: | "A number of turfgrass herbicides have shown activity on a wide range of weeds. However, it is usually necessary to apply these herbicides annually or as repeated treatments to obtain acceptable control. Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of consecutive herbicide treatments on the tolerance of five bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) cultivars and three zoysia grass (Zoysia spp.) cultivars. Repeated preemergence treatments of DCPA (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate), butralin (4-(1,l-dimethylethyl)-N-(1-methylpropyl)- 2,6-dinitrobenzenamine) and single treatments of profluralin (N- (cyclopropylmethyl)-α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro -N-propyl-p-tprosulfalin (N-((4-(dipropylamino)-3,5-dinitrophenyl) sulfonyl)-S,S- dimethylsulfilimine), and napropamide (2-(α,-naphthoxy)-N,N-diethylpropionamide) injured 'Tifgreen', 'Tifdwarf' and 'Ormond' bermudagrasses more than 'Tifway' bermudagrass. All bermudagrasses fully recovered by late summer except 'Tifgreen' and 'Tifdwarf' treated with butralin or profluralin. Repeated treatments of profluralin a~d oxadiazon (2-tert-butyl-4-(2,4-dichloro-S-isopropoxyphenyl)-^Dd -1,3,4-oxadiazolin-S-one) injured 'Matrella' zoysia more than 'Emerald' or 'Meyer' zoysia. Butralin and napropamide treatments injured all zoysia cultivars. However, all zoysia grasses completely recovered except 'Meyer' treated with napropamide. Postemergence treatments of methazole (2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)- 4-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazolidine-3,S-dione) injured 'Tifway' bermudagrass more than any of the other bermudagrasses while the injure from metribuzin (4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(rnethylthio)-a-striazine- S(4H)one) was similar for each bermudagrass cultivar: These results indicate that consecutive treatments of several herbicides injured bermudagrasses and zoysia grasses, but the amount of injury varied with different cultivars." |
