| Abstract/Contents: | "Although broad-leaf weeds in turf can be fairly succesfully [successfully] controlled by mixtures of herbicides such as 2,4-D and ioxynil, no herbicide is, at present, recommended for the selective control of undesirable grass species in temperate amenity grassland. The possibility of discovering such a selective herbicide is small as the amenity and unwanted grasses have similar tolerances of many herbicides (Fisher and Faulkner 1976). One possible alternative to the screening of herbicides is the production of amenity cultivars resistant of existing grass-killing herbicides (Wright 1966: Stottlemyer and Bailey 1972). The paper reports on the encouraging progress made in the breeding of such cultivars in A. tenuis and F. rubra." |
