| Abstract/Contents: | "A need exists for a system capable of providing a realistic and controlled environment for conducting research on turfgrass swards. Therefore a controlled environment system was constructed for evaluating the morphological and physiological responses of turfgrass swards to laboratory controlled environmental conditions. The system consists of three basic components: (1) An acrylic plastic assimilation cell which covers a 1,000 cm2 sward of turf, (2) a four-sided, glass root observation cell, and (3) an open gas exchange system with accompanying instrumentation. The system has the capability of controlled light intensity, light quality, daylength, diurnal air temperature, soil temperature, and relative humidity. The design of the facility allows continuous and concurrent monitoring of both morphological (shoots and roots) and physiological (photosynthesis, dark respiration, and evapotranspiration) responses of turfgrasses to a variety of laboratory simulated environmental conditions." |
