Abstract/Contents:"[Objective] The research aimed to study the mechanism of cold resistance for P.vaginatum Swartz. [Method] Paspalum vaginatum Swartz was treated in low temperature (15, 10, 5 ° C) and room temperature (25 °C). Choosing 6 large warm-season turf grasses as control, study on the cold hardiness and mechanism of cold resistance for Paspalum vaginatum Swartz was made, by means of determination of the physical indicators: soluble sugar (SS), proline (Pro), malondialdehyde (MDA), chlorophyll (Chl) and electrical conductivity (EC) of leaves. [Result] The results showed that the cold hardiness of Paspalum vaginatum Swartz was strong and grew vigorously, the change of cold hardiness physiology was little in Paspalum vaginatum Swartz at the appropriate low temperature (10 °C or so). But it died suddenly at extreme low temperature (5 °C or so). The material (such as proline and soluble sugar) of the cold hardiness in Paspalum vaginatum Swartz increased too little at low temperature. [Conclusion] The cold resistance of Paspalum vaginatum Swartz may be affected by a small number of the main genes. The effects of the mutation breeding may be good."
