Abstract/Contents:"The growth rates and seed yields of the 15 parents and 45 progenies of 13 Zoysia cross combinations were evaluated by the measurements of total stolon length, aboveground biomass, and seed yields. The results show that: 1. Abundant variations were detected in the total stolon length, aboveground biomass and seed yield among different materials. After five months of growth, the maximum total stolon length reached to 414.6 cm but the minimum only 23.4 cm; the maximum aboveground biomass was 32.39 g but the minimum 1.1 g; the coefficient of variation was 49.61% and 48.81%, respectively. The seed yield had the largest coefficient of variation reaching to 148.51% with the variation range of 0 to 1.32 g. 2. Cross-breeding expanded the variance ranges of growth rate and seed yield of zoysiagrass. Among the tested 45 progenies, there were 62.2% in total stolon length, 73.3% in aboveground biomass, and 68.9% in seed yield surpassed their parents. 3. Hybrids 40-9 and 31-3 had the fastest growing rate with the total stolon length of 365.103 and 326.475 cm and the aboveground biomass of 25.418 and 24.479 g after 5-month growth which were not significantly different from Z014 (Manila) and Z077 (Zoysia japonica Steud. cv. Lanyin No. 3), but obvious higher than those of Z129 (Z. japonica cv. Qingdao). Hybrids 26-4, 20-1, 11-1, and 20-3 had high seed yields of 1.32, 1.28, 0.98, and 0.96 g 100 cm-2, respectively, which were higher than the reported highest seed yield record of Z. japonica cv. Liaodong. 4. The seed yield of the tested materials was significantly and negatively correlated with the total stolon length and aboveground biomass."
