Abstract/Contents:Studies were made on a 16-year-old grass area which had received no care other than mowing and consequently had a high weed population and was severely matted. After 3 months' intensive management in 1967 the average weed population was reduced from 80% to 5%. The problem of matting was almost overcome and the grass cover was more uniform, dense and greener in color. Grassy weeds were not entirely eliminated and persisted in patches. In 1968 the area was divided into 3 plots; in addition to continued intensive management one plot received NPK fertilizer plus herbicides and one plot received herbicide treatment only. The control was not manured or treated with herbicides. Herbicides alone resulted in some success, in spite of the unfavorable weather. With the addition of fertilizer, however, the herbicide treatment destroyed the majority of the weeds. This method of turf regeneration is cheaper than resowing and has the advantage that areas such as sports fields can be retained in use during treatment. Careful management must continue for a number of years in order to maintain the turf quality. The grass should be well supplied with nutrients each year and the use of herbicides should be continued until all the old, deep-rooted, weeds are killed. Matting can only be avoided by the regular removal of the mown grass at least after each second cut. Mowing should be carried out at regular short intervals of 5-8 days, according to the weather.
