Abstract/Contents:"Field plots were established in 1989 on perennial ryegrass (`Palmer') swards at the Cornell University Turfgrass Field Research Laboratory, Ithaca, NY to evaluate various composts and organic fertilizers as amendments to top-dressings for the biological control of red thread. The test area was naturally infested with L. fuciformis. Turf was maintained at a 3.8 cm cutting height and a 19-0-19 fertilizer was applied on 17 Apr and 5 Jun at the rate of 264 kg/ha and 528 kg/ha, respectively. Top-dressing formulations consisted of 70% fine sand and 30% organic component (v:v) and were applied on 25 May to 0.9 x 0.9 m2 plots at the rate of 500 cm3/m2. Top-dressings were distributed by hand as uniformly as possible over the plot area then lightly rubbed-in by applying 0.6 cm of irrigation. All plots were evaluated for red thread severity on 1 Aug 89, 27 da after application, on a scale of 0-10 where 0 = none of the plot area diseased and 10 = 100% of the plot area symptomatic. All field experiments were established as a randomized complete block design with five replicates. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance and means were separated using the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. Only top-dressings amended with Sustane significantly suppressed red thread development as compared to untreated plots. Top-dressings formulated with composts prepared from sewage sludges, animal manures, leaves, spent mushrooms or brewery waste were ineffective in suppressing red thread. We conclude that some organic fertilizers may reduce damage from red thread when applied to turfgrass areas as a top=dressing."
