Abstract/Contents:"Tufted lovegrass (Eragrostis pectinacea) is a summer annual that invades the bare areas remaining after sod has been harvested thus slowing sod re-establishment. The impact of this weed is compounded by the slow growth of zoysiagrass which makes it a poor competitor during the establishment period. Lovegrass is not controlled by MSMA the most commonly used herbicide for postemergence grass control in zoysiagrass, and sod farmers are reluctant to use the dinitroaniline preemergence turfgrass herbicides due to their root inhibiting characteristics. During 1990 and 1991 several field experiments were conducted on three central Arkansas sod farms to evaluate herbicides for lovegrass control and `Meyer' zoysiagrass tolerance. Plots were 8 ft by 16 ft with 3 replications arranged in a randomized block design. Herbicides were applied at 20 GPA carrier volume and 24 PSI with a CO2 backpack sprayer equippped with Spraying Systems (R) 110-03 nozzles. In 1990, fenoxaprop applied June 28 at 0.25 lb/ai/a gave between 70 and 90% control of well tillered lovegrass 35 DAT (days after treatment). In 1991, fenoxaprop applied May 28 at .12, .18 and .25 lb/ai/a gave 67, 63 and 75% control of lovegrass, respectively, 65 DAT. No zoysiagrass injury was noted from any of the fenoxaprop treatments. Sethoxydim at 0.125 lb ai/a, quizalofop at 0.125 lb/ai/a and clethodim at 0.125 lb ai/a gave > 90% control of lovegrass but caused from 20 to 40% zoysiagrass injury. Diclofop at 0.75 lb ai/a and fluazifop at 0.09 lb ai/a were ineffective for lovegrass control but caused little zoysiagrass injury. Atrazine at 2.0 ib ai/a and metribuzin at 1.0 lb ai/a were effective for lovegrass control, however metribuzin caused unacceptable crop injury. In 1991, glyphosate was evaluated at low rates for control of lovegrass in actively growing zoysiagrass. Glyphosate applied June 20 at .14, .19, .28 and .38 lb/ae/a provided 10, 40, 60 and 93% control, respectively, of lovegrass 57 DAT. At 7 DAT, the .38 lb/ae/a rate was causing 10% zoysiagrass injury but all symptoms had disappeared by 21 DAT. A second glyphosate study initiated July 29 included rates of .28, .38, .56, and .75 lb/ae/a. At 21 DAT zoysiagrass injury levels were 23, 30, 40 and 43%, respectively. At 42 DAT, no injury was evident at the .28 and .38 lb/ae/a rates while the .56 and .75 lb/ae/a rates produced 25 and 30% injury. All rates gave > 90% lovegrass control. Glyphosate applied at similar rates on August 29 at another location caused unacceptable zoysiagrass injury. Further study of the effect of zoysiagrass maturity and herbicide application timing on sensitivity to glyphosate is needed."
