Abstract/Contents:"Experiments were conducted in 1990 and 1991 to evaluate herbicides for winter weed control. Experiment 1 was conducted at Jackson and Louisville, MS to evaluate herbicides for annual bluegrass ( Poa annua L.) control. In late January, there were no differences between October or November applications of 560 to 2240 g ai ha-1 simazine, 2240 g ai ha-1 atrazine, 1120 g ai ha-1 isoxaben, 3360 g ai ha-1 oryzalin, 1120 + 3360 g ha-1 isoxaben + oryzalin, 560 + 3360 g ai ha-1 simazine + pendimethalin (Pre-M r), 280 or 560 g ai ha-1 imazaquin, 3360 g ha-1 pendimethalin (Stomp r) or 280 + 1590 or 560 + 3360 g ha-1 imazaquin + pendimethalin (pre-package mix, Reflect r). Treatments, except less than or equal to 1120 g ha-1 simazine or 280 g ha-1 imazaquin, controlled annual bluegrass greater than or equal to 80%. By late February, only isoxaben + oryzalin provided greater than or equal to 80% annual bluegrass control at both locations. Experiment 2 was initiated to evaluate three pyridine herbicides for POST winter broadleaf weed control. Pyridine herbicides included 28 to 450 g ae ha-1 clopyralid or fluroxypyr or 28 to 227 g ae ha-1 triclopyr ester or amine. A pre-package mixture of 850 + 450 + 90 g ae ha-1 2, 4-D + mecoprop + dicamba was used for comparison. No treatment maintained greater than or equal to 70% control of henbit (Lamium amplexicaule L.), common chickweed [Stellaria media (L.) Cyrillo.], or Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum L.). Clopyralid at greater than or equal to 56 g ha-1 maintained control of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber in Wiggers) comparable to 2, 4-D + mecoprop + dicamba. Experiment 3 was conducted to evaluate 840 + 840 to 1120 + 1120 g ai ha-1 bentazon + atrazine for broadleaf weed control compared to 1680 g ha-1 atrazine. Carolina geranium and mouseear chickweed (Cerastium vulgatum L.) control was > 80% regardless of herbicide, rate, or evaluation date. White clover (Trifolium repens L.) control was greater than or equal to 78% at 20 d after treatment, but declined to less than or equal to 68% by 65 d after treatment. From 37 to 65 d after treatment, lawn burweed [Soliva pterosperma (Juss) Less.] control was > 80%."
