Abstract/Contents:"The reduction of sound emitted by a rotary lawn mower with a constant speed of 3 200 rev/min was recorded for hedges of varying thickness and height and composed of Pinus, Thuja, Syringa, Lonicera, Viburnum or Ligustrum spp. The sound level meter was sited l m above ground level and 6 m away from the source. The level of noise on a hedge-free plot was 70 dB; no hedge reduced it by more than 2 dB and there was no difference in muffling ability between evergreen and deciduous plants. Sound was absorbed and deflected best by the tallest and thickest hedges."
