Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were conducted along Mississippi highway rights-of-way to evaluate POST herbicides for control of southern crabgrass [Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel.], broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus L.), knotroot foxtail [Setaria geniculata (Lam.) Beauv.], woolly croton (Croton capitatus Michx.), and Illinois bundleflower [Desmanthus illinoensis (Michx.) Macmill. ex. B. L. Robins]. Treatments included glyphosate applied at 24, 35, and 47 g ae ha-1 and MSMA applied at 2240, 3360, and 4480 g ai ha-1. Sequential treatments of 2240 + 2240, 3360 + 3360, and 4480 g ha-1 MSMA were applied to broomsedge at a 2 wk interval. Both herbicides were applied alone or in combination with the additives Entry(R) or Frigate(R) at 0.5% (v/v). Broomsedge control with MSMA was generally > 75% which was significantly better than glyphosate at all rating dates. Number of MSMA applications or rate did not influence broomsedge control. By 18 wk after treatment (WAT), MSMA at greater than or equal to 2240 g ha-1 maintained greater than or equal to 75% control of broomsedge, and seed head suppression was greater than or equal to 60% with all rates regardless of additive or timing. Glyphosate maintained less than or equal to 60% control of broomsedge. The highest rate of glyphosate achieved 60% broomsedge seed head suppression at 7 WAT. In general, Frigate(R) was equivalent to Entry(R) as an adjuvant with glyphosate for broomsedge control. Both MSMA and glyphosate maintained > 75% control of knotroot foxtail, and there was no significant difference between Entry(R) or Frigate(R) as an adjuvant for glyphosate. Illinois bundleflower control exceeded 80% with 35 g ha-1 glyphosate but dropped to 75% by 43 WAT. All rates of MSMA maintained greater than or equal to 75% Illinois bundleflower control at all rating dates and woolly croton control was < 60% with all treatments. Southern crabgrass control with glyphosate was < 75% at all rating dates. The lowest rate of glyphosate maintained better southern crabgrass control compared to MSMA, regardless of adjuvant."
