Abstract/Contents:"Prodiamine is the common name for N(3), N(3), -Di-n-propyl-2, 4-dinitro-6- (trifluoromethyl)-m -phenylenediamine a dinitroaniline class herbicide. Prodiamine has low water solubility and atmospheric volatility with excellent soil persistence and herbicidal activity. The commercial product in turf, trade name Barricade(R) 65WG, is formulated as a 65% water dispersable granule. Barricade is a broad spectrum product that gives full season control of annual grasses and many small seeded broadleaf weeds when applied and activated by rainfall or irrigation prior to the germination and emergence of the weed. Barricade controls susceptible weed species as they germinate by the inhibition of seedling root and shoot growth. Normal recommended seasonal rates are: 0.65 lb ai/A (1.0 lb product) in Northern U.S., 0.81 ib ai/A (1.25 lb product) in the Transition zone, and 0.98 lb ai/A (1.50 lb product) in the Southern U.S. Annual grass weeds controlled include goosegrass (Eleusine indica L.) ELEIN, annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) POAAN, smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum Schreb. ex. Schweig.) DIGIS, large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L.) DIGSA, and yellow foxtail (Setaria glauca L.) SETLU. Difficult to control weeds such as goosegrass respond best to sequential applications of Barricade. Small seeded annual broadleaf weeds controlled include prostrate spurge (Euphorbia humistrata Engelm. ex. Gray) EPHHT, henbit (Lamium amplexicaule L.) LAMAM, and common chickweed (Stellaria media L.) STEME. One of the strengths of Barricade is consistent long term control over a wide geography, relative to many currently used commercial standards. Barricade, at recommended use rates, is no more injurious to turfgrasses than currently used competitive materials. The maximum recommended annual rate for turfgrasses ranges from 0.50 lb. ai/A (0.8 lb. product) to 1.5 lb. ai/A (2.30 lb. product) dependent upon the sensitivity of the turfgrass type and whether the turf is under establishment. Cool season turfgrasses generally tend to be more sensitive and have lower maximum annual use rates than warm season turfgrasses. Unless otherwise directed in the label, Barricade should only be applied to turf that is filled in and established. Reseeding or overseeding can be done effectively if preplanning provides approximately 4-6 months waiting period for each 0.50 lb. ai/A (0.75 lb product) applied. The waiting interval can be shortened to 3-4 months if the turf surface is opened and seed is drilled directly into the soil."
