Abstract/Contents:"For some time by now lights are more and more in use on sport play grounds in order to secure their quality and boost the growth of the grass on these fields. It is so possible to stimulate steadily the growth of the turf on the shady areas or during the winter play time. Using as example of the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, different criteria were determined systematically for the HGK thesis which enabled them to measure and compare the light effectivity with or without CO2 gaz. During the test period, from the beginning of September till the end of October considerable differences between the treated and the untreated varieties could be detected as well as in the sward growth as in the quantity of their swathe. As for the criteria "colour aspect", the values measured during the test revealed no clear differences. These results were furthermore confirmed through visual impressions. The impact of the different lights appeared clearly when analysing the parameter "density of the sward". Just at the end of the test period the grass coverage rate diminished considerably on the shady areas. When analysing the sward shear strength criteria, there was a tendence towards better data by light while the lit-off areas showed a constant decrease. In this case the influence of mechanical field maintenance works can not be excluded. In conclusion, it is possible to provide a high quality turf canopy with natural grass in a shady soccer arena thanks extensive technical and financial investments and intensive maintenance works."
