Abstract/Contents:"In France, amenity grasses are turf grasses other than those used in the sportfield area: ornamental turf, open spaces turf and ground covers. Their common characteristic is to create plurispecific stands by mixing grass species, cultivars of a species and/or dicots. Examples of mixtures used in several European countries are given. In most cases, the composition of the mixture is obtained by observing the components in monostands. Thereby, several problems are appearing: conviviality of cultivars and species present in the mixture; moving [mowing] height and frequency; otimal fertilization and irrigation; herbicide and pesticide use. Little research information exist at the present time about establishment, comportment and maintenance of polystands. Future prospects could be in the following areas: selected cultivars with low water and fertilization needs, drought resistance, pesticide and herbicide resistance; mixtures for special environmental conditions (shade, high mountain climate, roadside for example); allelopathy in grasses and dicots polystands and in grasses-lignous stands."
