| Abstract/Contents: | "Integrated control (IC) is the use of multiple pest or disease control strategies, in a logical and planned manner, where one strategy has a detectable effect on another. For example, IC is achieved when chemical control strategies interact with adviseries from disease forecasting systems resulting in a reduction in the frequency of fungicide applications. IC differs from integrated pest management (IPM) by being directed at individual, rather than multiple, pests or diseases. This makes IC an important step in the transition from conventional, nonintegrated pest control to IPM. The development of IC programs for turfgrass has been hindered by the search for alternatives, rather than complements, to chemical controls. The discovery of additivity or synergy between chemical and nonchemical strategies for disease control will provide proof that integration can be achieved. IC must be emphasized in education as well as research. Therefore, the concept of the disease control triangle is introduced as a means of teaching IC to students studying turfgrass science." |
