Abstract/Contents:"Research on the impacts of agrichemical use on water quality has recently attracted the attention of the media, government, and turfgrass scientists. Early studies of runoff quality in urban settings do not provide useful data for assessing the contribution of turfgrass management to water contamination. Both empirical evidence and documented studies indicate that runoff volumes from well-managed turfgrass stands are minimal. Recent modeling efforts suggest that the environmental conditions associated with established turfgrass stands are conducive to the rapid assimilation and degradation of organic pesticides. Although published data that test this theory are scarce, the few studies that have been completed appear to support it. These two factors - low runoff volumes and effective attenuation of chemicals - suggest that runoff is probably not a major pathway for applied chemicals to migrate from their intended site. Hydrologic characterization and monitoring of watersheds containing treated turfgrass are necessary to determine the actual impact of these activities on surface water."
