Abstract/Contents:"The golf boom is still continuing in Japan and over 2,200 golf courses will be in operation within 2 to 3 years. However, with a heated campaign against environmental pollution, particularly, water contamination by pesticides used on golf courses, the golf industry faces a serious situation. Pesticides has been reported as the cause of water pollution at a number of golf courses. Chiba prefecture, southeast of Tokyo, has even banned pesticide application on newly opened golf courses since March 31, 1990. In order to clear social unease, numerous laws and regulations were established and efforts were initiated better educate course maintenance workers throughout the country. In cooperation with the government, the Turfgrass Research & Development Organization of Japan has established the Turf Managers' Licence System and the Monitoring System of Water Pollution at Golf Courses. The prefectural governments have presently certified 2,443 pesticide applicators. The Green and Safety Promoters Association, consisting of 278 agrichemical companies certified 204 GREEN SUPERVISORS. This means that there are one to three certified pesticide applicators at each course. A nationwide survey was conducted to water quality clearly showed that some pesticides were detected in the discharged water, but far below the tolerance level, indicating no serious water pollution in the drainage system on the golf courses. This goal was attained largely by education, dissemination and thoroughness of proper usage of pesticides. Turfgrass research has been initiated at the prefectural agricultural experiment stations and private research institutes to develop a pesticide-free method of turf maintenance."
