Abstract/Contents:A study, by W. M. Lewis, J. M. DiPaola and W. B. Gilbert at North Carolina State University, evaluated growth retardants for their use on roadsides and home lawns. The retardants used in this study were flurprimidol (Cutlass), mefluidide (Embark), EPTC (Eptam), paclobutrazol (Parlay), maleic hydrazide (Slo-Gro), and MON 4621. For turf under roadside conditions leaf tip burn was the most common injury. Injury was greater on bahiagrass than tall fescue. Seedhead suppression was greater on tall fescue than bahiagrass and exceeded 90% with Slo Gro (4 lb a.i./A) and MON 4621 (2.5 lb a.i./A). Turf under home lawn conditions generally exhibited reduced quality from two to six weeks after application due to phytotoxic effects. Reduction of stand density was only temporary. Leaf color after eight weeks was enhanced with maleic hydrazide, mefluidide, and MON 4621, but not with flurprimidol and paclobutrazol.
