Abstract/Contents:"Four preemergence herbicides were applied overtop and below four newly transplanted turfgrass sods to determine their effects on root regrowth. The herbicides (formulation) and rates evaluated were: bensulide (7G) 14 kg ha-1, oryzalin (4AS) 2.2 kg ha-1, oxadiazon (2G) 3.4 kg ha-1, and pendimethalin (60DG) 1.7 kg ha-1. The transplanted turfgrasses used were centipedegrass, tall fescue/Kentucky bluegrass, `Tifway' bermudagrass, and `Meyer' zoysiagrass. Sod root development and turf quality were determined 47 d after herbicide application to the newly laid sod in the first test and 44 d in the second test. Both tests were irrigated to encourage sod establishment. Sod was laid over expanded metal frames, 30 cm(-2), placed level with the soil. Herbicide effects on development of new roots was determined as the force required to lift the sod from the soil and termed root strength. Rooting depth and turf quality were also evaluated. Oxadiazon applied overtop transplanted sod was least harmful to turfgrass root development. Root strength values compared to the untreated declined 24 to 31% for pendimethalin, 28 to 38% for bensulide, and 64% for oryzalin. Root depth measurements and turf quality ratings were: oxadiazon > pendimethalin > bensulide > oryzalin. With the exception of oxadiazon, placement of the herbicide below the sod was detrimental to turf quality and root development as measured by root strength and root depth. In the first test, rooting strength and depth were greatest for centipedegrass and `Tifway' bermudagrass, intermediate for tall fescue/Kentucky bluegrass and least for `Meyer' zoysiagrass. The tall fescue/Kentucky bluegrass sod had the poorest root development in the second test."
