Abstract/Contents:"It is recommended that premergence herbicides be applied approximately two weeks before annual grassy weed seed germination. This is the busy time of the year for professional turf managers and herbicide applications at this time are often difficult to schedule. The objective of this 2 year study was to define the window of application of preemergence herbicides for season long control of crabgrass. Two rates of pendimethalin (N - (1 - ethylpropyl) - 3, 4 - dimethyl - 2, 6 - dinitrobenzenamine), prodiamine (N(3), N(3) - di - n - propyl - 2, 4 - dinitro - 6 - (trifluoromethyl) benxeneamine), and dithiopyr (S, S - dimethyl, 2 - (difluoromethyl) - 4 - (2 - methylpropyl) - 6 - (trifluoromethyl) - 3, 5 - pyridinedicarbothioate) were applied on three dates in late fall and five dates in spring to common Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) grown on a silt loam soil in West Lafayette, IN. Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) control ratings were taken in Aug. following application. Prodiamine and dithiopyr produced season long control of crabgrass when applied at the high rate in late fall and early spring. Pendimethalin produced acceptable control of crabgrass when applied at the high rate near the traditional time of application. The application timing of preemergence herbicides is not as exact as once thought. Early spring applications of preemergence herbicides can be effective in controlling crabgrass. The relatively new herbicides prodiamine and dithiopyr expand the effective window of application for use of preemergence herbicides."
