Abstract/Contents:Environmental auditing is a systematic, documented, periodic and objective review by regulated entities (golf courses) of facility operations and practices related to meeting environmental requirements. The golf course superintendent plays a more significant role than any other member of the golfing community in helping to safeguard the quality of our environment and assuring safe and healthful surroundings for players and workers alike. The Hall-Kimbrell/GCSAA Compliance Assistance Program was developed specifically for the golf course industry to help golf course superintendents improve compliance at their facilities and help them become better environmental managers in the process. The manager listens to an informative tape, and then fills out a self-audit questionnaire. The purpose of the audit is to determine facts not find fault. The report prepared by the staff at Hall-Kimbrell will advise what management practices should be instituted to ensure compliance. The audit insures that the manager will avoid fines and criminal penalties that may result from violation of environmental statutes. Demonstration of increased concern for environmental protection will improve relationships with potentially concerned organizations and individuals and lessen the likelihood of an adversarial interaction with these groups.
