Abstract/Contents: | "A research program carried out over the past decade has highlighted key elements that determine the playing performance of elite sand-based sports fields. The research illustrates the dynamic nature of sand sports fields, with properties such as infiltration rate fluctuating significantly over time. The practice of transitioning (overseeding a C4 grass with a C3 grass) is common practice in Australia. Investigation shows that the greatest challenge with transitioning is the return to a full C4 grass cover over spring, and therefore models have been derived to determine optimal transitioning dates. Methods used to measure playing surface performance of sports fields have been critiqued and practical recommendations derived. A modified method for measuring infiltration rate of sports surfaces, including hard surfacing, is proposed. Data collected from leading sports fields around Australia have enabled a recommended set of playing surface performance guidelines to be derived." |
