Abstract/Contents:"Three biological soil insecticides based on the insect parasitic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) have been developed in the United States (Exhibit(R), Ciba-Geigy; Biosafe(R), Ortho Chevron) and Japan (BioSafe(R), SDS Biotech) for use against soil-inhabiting turfgrass pests, as part of an integrated pest management (I.P.M.) strategy. Other nematode species such as S. glaseri (Steiner) targeted against white grubs and S. scaptersci (Nguyen and Smart) targeted against mole crickets are under development. Progress achieved in liquid fermentation, with capacities up to 80,000 liters per fermenter and formulation stability, as well as generating field efficacy comparable to standard insecticides, will allow these nematodes to become competitive in the turfgrass market."
