Abstract/Contents:"The effect of slit tine and hollow tine aeration programmes was examined for five construction types, ranging from a sandy loam soil with a basic pipe drainage system, to a sand rootzone overlying a gravel drainage layer. The trial was sown with perennial ryegrass and received simulated soccer-type wear for three years. Regular slit tine aeration, carried out throughout the period of wear, had no effect on water infiltration rates, but there was a consistently higher rate of loss of cover during wear, compared with plots receiving no aeration. Playing quality of the areas receiving slit tine aeration was poor compared with the untreated area, with a reduction in firmness, ball rebound and traction. Hollow tine aeration, carried out only during the summer growing period, had less effect on turf quality and playing performance although there was some evidence of better grass retention on the hollow tined areas."
