| Abstract/Contents: | "Three cultivation techniques were evaluated for effects on loosening of soil and rooting of Poa pratensis L. sod. Cultivation techniques included rototilling and use of a vertically-operating aerifier with hollow or solid tines. Rooting responses were based on the force required to lift sod rooting boxes placed on treated plots. All 3 cultivation techniques increased sod rooting in a compacted sandy loam soil when lifted within 4 to 8 weeks after sodding. Ten months after sodding differences in lifting weights were smaller and there was no difference in rooting between the untreated check and the rototilled plots; but solid tine cultivation had significantly higher lifting weights than the check. Short term reductions in bulk density and increases in macroporosity due to cultivation were lost over a 10-month period, indicating the benefits of cultivation were transient. Solid and hollow tines were more effective in loosening soil when cultivated under dry (2-4% moisture) soil conditions while rototilling was effective under a wider range of soil moisture (up to 12% moisture) conditions. The use of a vertically-operating, high-energy impact aerifier proved effective as a cultivation tool in preparing soil for sod establishment." |
