Abstract/Contents:"Canopy temperatures, as measured by infrared thermometry, have potential for irrigation scheduling of turfgrasses; however, limited data exists for application in humid climates. A field study was conducted using three turfgrasses Cynodon dactylon L. Pers. 'Tifway', Eremochloa ophiuroides 'common', and Zoysia japonica 'Meyer'. Data were obtained to develop two canopy temperature-based irrigation scheduling indices: a) crop water stress index (CWSI), and b) summation of stress degree days (sigmaSDD). Each grass exhibited a unique lower basline (well-irrigated) for the CWSI procedure but baselines were similar enough to combine for irrigation scheduling. Comparison with baselines from semi-arid and arid climates revealed that under humid conditions: a) the lower baseline exhibited a less negative slope, b) considerable more variability in climatic data used to determine the CWSI baseline occurred, and c) the CWSI did not accurately predict moisture stress. The sigma SDD appeared to have more potential for pratical use in humid environments."
