Abstract/Contents:"Heavy fertilization of turfgrass frequently is considered environmentally undesirable. Increasing efficiency of nutrient uptake and utilization to reduce the fertilization requirement for high turf quality may provide a solution. Application of plant growth regulator (PGR): fortified seaweed extract (FSE) or propiconazole (PPC), have been found to enhance turfgrass growth and development and to improve turf quality. However the effect of the PGR on nutrient uptake and utilization has not been well documented. The purposes of this study were to determine the effect of fertilizer and the PGR on the quality of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and on nutrient uptake and utilization, and to examine the possibility of using PGR to reduce the fertilization requirement. Three levels of fertilization combined with and without FSE and PPC were applied on 'Plush' Kentucky bluegrass. The PGRs improved the turfgrass quality and enhanced uptake efficiency for most macro-elements and some micro-elements at the lower fertilization level. Utilization efficiency of most of the nutrients was enhanced with the PGR treatment under both high and low fertilization. The effect of the PGRs and fertilization on turf quality and nutrient efficiency may be attributed to the changes of endogenous growth substances."
