Abstract/Contents: | "Long-term research provides insight into the ecological adaptations and sustainability of agricultural systems. We are able to assess species variability with regard to sustainability, considering genetic and environmental influences. The Park Grass Experiment at The Rothamsted Classical Sites demonstrateed the ability of sweet vernal (Anthoxanthum odoratum, L.) a widely distributed naturalized grass species, to colonize and persist in each of the 27 experimental edaphic conditions over a 150 year period. Additionally, intraspecific variability included substantial heavy metal and drought tolerance and disease, and insect resistance. Turfgrass cultural experimentation conducted in Rhode Island demonstrates theintraspecific variability, phenotypic plasticity, and the potential of sweet vernal as a sustainable turfgrass species." |
