Abstract/Contents:"Leptinella dioica (formerly Cotula sp.) a native herb, is used widely for lawn bowling greens in New Zealand. Research on this species is confined to local studies of management and breeding programs. During the years 1988-89, 526 dioica plants were collected for the New Zealand Bowling Association from bowling greens and natural sites throughout New Zealand. Cuttings from 466 plants were propagated for mowed field evaluations. Initial observations confirmed a wide variation in habit and desirability. Plants were then sorted into 13 distinct phenotypes, differing in stolon spread, leaf erectness, fineness and color. Of these, eight identified as having suitable charactersitics along with four existing lines were further evaluated as space plants or plots at Palmerston North. Material from the 12 lines was also introduced into greens throughout the country to test for regional differences. Initial results indicated similar phenotypes scored highly for desirability in both plots and greens. Within the better material there still exists variation from which improved strain(s) can be selected. Twenty-eight plants from the field evaluation collection now form the nucleus of an L. dioica improvement program.
