| Abstract/Contents: | "A review of research on the reproductive biology and ecology of Poa annua indicates an extremely variable species, ranging from annual or biennial to strongly perennial types. It exhibits many of the characteristics of an actively evolving species. There is wide variation in seed yield potential among genes, indicating possible rapid evolution of types. Both selling and crossing are commonly observed within the species. Floral characteristics may favor selfing, by early pollen shed on compact inflorescences, especially under high density conditions. Crossing is facilitated by male sterile florets and more open flower heads. Pollen is normally shed between 03:00 and 08:00. Both diploid (2N=14) and tetraploid (2N=28) chromosome types are found. Diploid genotypes tend to be dwarf and finer textured than the normal tetraploid type, and appear to be male sterile." |
