| Abstract/Contents: | "Turfgrass persistence and quality are detrimentally affected when grown under soil stress conditions. Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) cultivars were simultaneously evaluated at pH \< 4.0 and pH >/ 5.2 during 1991 in the field. Sprig diameter and quality measurements were collected six months after planting. Spread indices [(stressed diameter / nonstressed diameter) x 100] indicated Dalz 8514, Dalz 9512, and Sunburst produced good diameters, as well as quality ratings under both environmental conditions. Dalz 8502 and Dalz 8701 had very poor spread indices, diameter measurements, and quality ratings in both environments. By subjecting the cultivars to extremely low pH-stressed soil environments in the field, the cultivars that have good to excellent adaptation to fluctuating environmental stress conditions can be identified." |
