| Abstract/Contents: | "The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with support from the United States Golf Association, is conducting a project with the objective of breeding and developing buffalograss, Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt) Engelm for golf course turf. This species would use less water, fertilizer and pesticides than most currently used grasses. Buffalograss is a perennial, low growing, drought tolerant species native to the Central and Southern Great Plains. Its use for turf has been limited to low maintenance home lawns, golf courses and industrial sites. This project had three main areas of focus: 1) selection of clones with turf-type characteristics and breeding of cultivars that would be planted vegetatively or by seed, 2) development of propagation techniques which would enhance establishment of vegetative clones, and 3) development of management practice recommendations which would allow the successful utilization of this species for turf situations. The first cultivar '609' developed in this program has been released and is under commercial production." |
