Abstract/Contents:"Rapid turfgrass establishment reduces potential for soil loss by wind and water erosion and averts weed encroachment, while permitting use of the site as soon as possible (Beard, 1973). Vegetative establishment of warm season turfgrasses may be accomplished by sodding, sprigging or plugging. Plugging and sprigging are normally done during the optimal growing season for each grass, whereas sodding may be possible throughout the year. Situations arise where planting may not be possible at the most desirable times. Other considerations in vegetative turfgrass establishment are availability and cost of planting stock. The objectives of this experiment were to determine optimum planting dates, rates, and establishment method(s) of vegetatively propagated warm season turfgrasses, including bermudagrass, buffalograss, St. Augustinegrass, and zoysiagrass. Sod, and two rates each of sprigs and plugs of each species were planted monthly, with subsequent monthly ratings for percent coverage. Sprig and plug treatments of bermudagrass and buffalograss established the fastest of all planting methods. Severe cold peridos near winter planting dates may reduce plug of sprig survival, paritcularly with bermudagrass or St. Augustinegrass. Plug size for St. Augustinegrass should be greater than 5 cm X 5 cm to increase node counts, which affect establishment rate."
