Abstract/Contents:"We investigated the (un)saturated underground ( 2 to 9 m depth) of six different aged sports fields in southwest Germany. The maintenance of the pitches was very high, N-fertilization with IBDU-containing slow release fertilizers was between 300 and 360 kg ha-1yr-1. We estimated nutrient removals and calculated yearly balances for N between +105 and +250 kg ha-1yr-1. It is assumed, that a high proportion of N is incorporated in the organic matter of the sward. The amounts for NO3-N in the underground ranged between 70 and 220 kg ha-1 N. Three fields contained more NH4-N than NO3-N. The total amounts of inorganic N (NO3-N + NH4-N) were 185 to 473 kg ha-1 N, the older fields seemed to have the lower contents. There was no correlation to yearly N-balance. These amounts of inorganic N are comparable to those found in agricultural crop rotations with cereals/root crops. As calculated from the amounts of dissolvable organic carbon (DOC), denitrification may have occurred in the underground of 3 of 6 fields tested. We calculated yearly S-balances between +150 and +250 kg ha-1yr-1. The amounts of sulfate (SO4-S) in the underground ranged between 465 and 1115 kg ha-1 S. We did not find any correlation with yearly S-balance."
